Statement on the Tragic Incident Involving the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations Col. Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo

The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is deeply saddened by the tragic death of the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations Col. (Rtd.) Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo, following a shooting
incident at his home this morning.
The Minister, who has also been the Member of Parliament for Oyam North, was reportedly shot at by one of his bodyguards, Pte. Wilson Sabiiti, who also took his own life shortly thereafter.
The Minister’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Lt. Ronald Otim, was similarly shot and wounded and is currently receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital. Pte. Sabiiti had been part of the UPDF-seconded security detail for the Minister for only a
month (April).
The circumstances leading to the incident are being investigated We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Minister, and pray that Lt. Otim is out of danger.
The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development will provide additional information in due course and as may be advised by the investigating team, Parliament and the relevant authorities of Government.
