MULAGO AND KIKONI SKILLING CENTERS EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN PISGBC SPORTS GALA

The Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl/Boy child (PISGBC) project yesterday organized a football and netball sports gala where all the nine skilling centers in Kampala participated.

The tournament that was held at Makerere College School sports grounds saw the victorious centers winning trophies, cows, goats among other prizes.

The nine centers under PISGBC are Luzira, Wabigalo, Kigowa, Wandegeya, Subway, Mutundwe, Kikoni, Mulago and Nakulabye.

In football, Mulago Skilling Center emerged champion after trouncing Kikoni Skilling Center in penalty shoot-out while Kikoni Skilling Center carried the day in netball after defeating Mutundwe Skilling Center.

The Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hon. Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, while handing over the trophies to the winners, congratulated the youths for exhibiting their talents in sports and said that these skills will enable them earn a living and improve their livelihoods.

She assured the youths that the government is ready to support them in bringing out their talents so that they become participants in national development.

The Special Presidential Assistant on Education and Skilling who also serves as PISGBC Project Head, Dr. Faith Katana Mirembe said sports is one of the skilling programs the project has included in its modules, in an effort to help the underprivileged youths discover their hidden talents.

The PISGBC is President Yoweri Museveni’s initiative aimed at skilling the less privileged youths in Kampala with knowledge in hairdressing, embroidery, tailoring, knitting, weaving, shoe making, bakery and confectionery. The goal is to ensure that the needy children benefit from the Presidential initiative from various centers so that they can be self-employed.

At the end of the 6 months course, beneficiaries do an assessment exam given by the Directorate of industrial training (DIT) and are given certificates.

Among the people who attended the sports gala were the Resident City Commissioner of Kampala,Ms. Aminah Lukanga, PISGBC Staff and many other invited guests.
