Fire Guts City House Building in Kampala

A fire broke out on today Monday 11th ,December 2023 morning in City House, located on Luwum Street in downtown Kampala. City House, known as the headquarters of Uganda’s oldest political organization, the Democratic Party, and home to various businesses, including the renowned Bata shoe sellers, suffered extensive damage. The incident occurred around 8 am as businesses were opening for the day, trapping individuals in the multi-storied building. Fortunately, the Uganda Police fire brigade swiftly responded, rescuing those stranded.

The fire, spreading to neighboring buildings, prompted a response from emergency services, causing traffic congestion in the city center. Luwum Street was cordoned off by the police as efforts to control the fire continued. The source of the fire remains unidentified.

Expressing discontent, a resident at City House stated, “The fire incident has left us profoundly unhappy, particularly as we approach the festive season. Nearly all our goods were on the brink of destruction in the fire, and we appreciate the efforts of the Uganda Police Fire Brigade.”

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, stated, “We have seven fire trucks with our officers deployed to contain the fire at City House shopping centre in Kampala.”

The cause of the Monday morning fire is under police investigation, as it tore through the walls and roof of City House along William Street in Kampala. The building houses various businesses, rentals, and offices for the Democratic Party (DP).
