The KCCA Valuation Tribunal, chaired by Samuel Muyizzi, convened an important session at Okuvu Church in Mbuya Nakawa Division on Monday, aimed at addressing concerns regarding property levies and enhancing community involvement. The sessions will continue until Thursday.
Muyizzi expressed appreciation to the Mayor Erias Lukwago for initiatives that bring the tribunal closer to the residents, highlighting the significance of accessibility and community interaction.
During the session, Muyizzi stressed the importance of adhering to legal protocols, emphasizing the necessity for individuals to file petitions within 30 days after receiving levies.
However, he acknowledged situations where individuals were unable to meet this deadline and emphasized the tribunal’s dedication to inclusivity and impartiality, avoiding the exclusion of those who missed the timeframe.
Muyizzi credited this approach to the guidance of the Executive Director (ED) Dorothy Kisaka, who stressed the application of common law and fairness when engaging with the community.
He expressed appreciation to the ED and her team for their assistance in facilitating the tribunal’s activities.
Recognizing the importance of property taxation in community advancement, Muyizzi reiterated the tribunal’s role as a crucial connector in the process, emphasizing the necessity of awareness campaigns to ensure community members grasp the implications of property tax decisions.
The Valuation Tribunal, functioning with authority akin to a Magistrate’s court, specializes in resolving property taxation matters within the division.
Its duties include conducting property assessments, reviewing property values upon request, and adjudicating on tax exemptions. Particularly important is its power to reassess property rates based on valid arguments presented by complainants, ensuring equitable tax practices.
Godfrey Luyombya, Speaker of Nakawa Division, and Charles Mpindi, Councilor, also attended the session, demonstrating the collaborative efforts of local authorities to address community issues.
The Valuation Tribunal’s dedication to transparency and equity in property taxation matters underscores its pivotal role in promoting fair tax practices and encouraging community engagement in governance processes.
