Uganda’s coffee exports reached a record breaking USD 1.144 Bn in the FY 2023/24. Uganda exported 6.13 million bags of coffee, up from 5.8 million bags in FY 2022/23, accounting for USD 846 million. This represents a 6.33% increase in value compared to the previous financial years earnings.
The growth in value and volumes is attributed to the effective regulations by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority, UCDA, that has led to improved coffee quality which has resulted in high prices. Currently farmers are earning the highest prices in 30 years.
Uganda’s coffee is in high demand in global markets for its quality. The target now is to achieve the Coffee Roadmap target of 20 million 60kg bags produced by 2030. UCDA now says with the current trajectory, the roadmap target is achievable.
President Yoweri Museveni in 2017 signed the Coffee Roadmap that set a target of USD 1.5Bn annually in foreign exchange earnings from 20 Million bags.
