Strengthening Uganda-China Relations: Meeting Between Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar and H.E Zhang Lizhong

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, met with H.E Zhang Lizhong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China on July 17th 2024.

During the discussions, Ambassador Zhang highlighted the preparations for the upcoming Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting in Beijing from 3rd to 8th September 2024. He emphasized China’s commitment to welcoming African leaders and encouraged Uganda’s active participation in shaping the outcomes, including the Beijing Declaration and Action Plan. These efforts align with Africa’s Agenda 2063, underscoring the importance of collaboration for sustainable development.

The elevation of China-Uganda relations to the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative level was celebrated, marking Uganda as one of the select few African countries enjoying such a distinguished status. This recognition is a testament to the dynamic and fruitful partnership that has led to tangible benefits for both nations.

A proposed Memorandum of Understanding on Global Development Initiatives was discussed, demonstrating both countries’ commitment to fostering international collaboration and addressing global challenges together.

Hon. Gen. Odongo extended an invitation to the Chinese Embassy team to visit Soroti, promoting cultural exchange and showcasing Uganda’s rich heritage and hospitality.

This meeting reflects the ongoing commitment to dialogue and cooperation, reinforcing the special relationship between Uganda and China. The Ministry looks forward to further strengthening this partnership for the benefit of both nations and the broader international community.
