Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has pledged to enhance educational infrastructure in Kampala city in the financial year 2024/2025, with over 20 classrooms set to be constructed as part of the Smart City agenda.
During a recent press briefing at City Hall, Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka emphasized the authority’s dedication to improving the education sector, focusing on the three pillars of the Smart City agenda: technological advancement, infrastructural development, and citizens’ well-being.
There are 79 KCCA government-aided primary schools and 22 government-aided secondary schools in the city, all providing universal education in line with the government’s policy of free education.
In the last financial year 2023/24, KCCA made significant progress in upgrading educational facilities across the city. Over 30 schools benefited from renovations and new constructions.
Additionally, KCCA acquired 1.685 acres of land for Kasubi Family Primary School, demonstrating its commitment to expanding educational infrastructure.
“Our objective is to create a better city through strategic investments in education, technology, and infrastructure,” Kisaka stated.
To enhance the learning environment, KCCA supplied 150 desks to 10 schools, ensuring students have better seating arrangements. The removal of asbestos, remodeling, and expansion of classroom and laboratory blocks were completed at Kololo SS.
These initiatives align with KCCA’s broader goal of improving the quality of education and promoting a conducive learning atmosphere.
For the upcoming financial year 2024/2025, Kisaka outlined plans to complete several new classroom blocks. Nakivubo Primary School will see the construction of a nine-classroom block, Mpererwe Primary School will receive a six-classroom block, and Kasubi Family Primary School will benefit from both a nine-classroom block and fencing to secure the school premises.
In addition to primary school upgrades, KCCA is set to construct a seed secondary school in the Kawempe division. Kyambogo College School will undergo significant renovations, including the removal of asbestos iron sheets to ensure a safer learning environment.
The Smart City Agenda is a comprehensive plan to modernize Kampala and improve the quality of life for its residents.
