The NRM Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, today commenced the nomination of NRM candidates to compete for the party flag ahead of the Kisoro district woman Member of Parliament seat by-election. The November by-election aims to fill the seat left vacant by Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who also served as the state minister for defense.
The three-day nomination process kicked off with the endorsement of five aspirants at the electoral commission’s office, located at plot 13, Kyadondo road, Nakasero. The nominated candidates are Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, Dushime Sylvia, Igiraneza Winfred Faith, Kabagenyi Rose, and Irankunda Jemimah.
“The NRM will retain the Kisoro seat because the electorate there strongly supports the party, and we don’t foresee any significant competition once our flag bearer is selected,” Dr. Tanga remarked.
The NRM Electoral Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent and impartial election, stressing that “no individual will be permitted to compromise the process, not even the party leader.”
“Any efforts to sway the results outside the established procedures will be firmly opposed,” the EC chairman affirmed.
The commission also warned candidates against engaging in divisive actions and violence, noting that such behavior could result in disqualification.
Now that the mourning period for the late Hon. Nyirabashitsi has concluded, the focus has shifted to the future. The NRM is determined to choose a candidate who will “propel Kisoro forward,” and Dr. Tanga urged all candidates to concentrate on their plans for the community rather than dwelling on past events.
