NRM and SPLM Forge Partnership for Ideological Training and Cross-Border Cooperation

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) have formalized a cooperation agreement aimed at providing ideological training for South Sudan’s ruling party leaders in Uganda at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.

The agreement was reached today, Saturday, during a high-level meeting attended by top officials from both the NRM Secretariat and the SPLM delegation. The NRM team was led by Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, and National Treasurer, Amb. Barbara Nekesa.

On the SPLM side, the delegation was headed by CDE. Bol Makueng Youl, the SPLM Secretary for External Relations, accompanied by Dr. John Oryem, Secretary for Training and Research, Antipas Nyok Kucha, Deputy Principal for Political School, and the Director for Political Desk, Dennis Marial Mourwel.

Secretary General Todwong highlighted that both parties agreed to strengthen unity and capacity building for SPLM leaders through ideological training at the renowned political leadership institute.

“The Secretariat commits to supporting the training of our brothers and sisters as a contribution to fostering multiparty democracy in the world’s youngest nation,” said Mr. Todwong.

Todwong further revealed that discussions were held on how Uganda and South Sudan could enhance socioeconomic empowerment for their citizens through seamless cross-border trade.

SPLM’s head of delegation, Cde. Bol Makueng Yuol, praised the NRM for its unwavering support during South Sudan’s struggle for self-determination and continued assistance in defense, economic development, and democratic governance.

“You stood with us in our fight for self-determination, and you continue to support us in strengthening our economy and democracy,” Bol noted.

“We are eager to realize the training of our cadres to ensure the party is guided by ideologically grounded leaders who will drive the nation forward,” he added.

NRM National Treasurer Amb. Barbara Nekesa expressed the NRM’s openness to learning from the SPLM’s political strategies to enhance its own mobilization and service delivery to the public.

She also advocated for dialogue between SPLM’s leadership and opposition forces, urging both sides to cease hostilities and engage in peace talks for the well-being of the citizens.

NRM’s External Affairs Director, Rtd. Maj. Awich Pollar, reiterated the party’s dedication to collaborating with revolutionary movements to develop their countries, driven by shared ideals and goals.

“It is fitting that such a revolutionary party visits us to discuss mutual progress,” Maj. Awich stated.

Other NRM officials in attendance included Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Deputy National Treasurer Hon. Jaqueline Kyatuhaire, Directors Hon. Emmanuel Dombo (Communications), Maj. Okwir Rabwoni (Youth and Institutions), and Counsel Enoch Barata (Legal Services).
