The Uganda Senior Women’s National Team, the Crested Cranes, delivered a determined performance to edge out DR Congo in an international friendly match on Sunday at Stade De Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa.
Sunday’s game was the first of two scheduled matches between the teams, with the second set for Wednesday, October 30th, at the same venue.
Fazila Ikwaput opened the scoring for Uganda in the 22nd minute, lofting the ball over the Congolese goalkeeper Khonde. In the second half, however, the hosts came back rejuvenated, equalizing in the 61st minute through Flavine Mawete.
Despite the setback, Uganda stayed composed and maintained control of the game. Coach Sheryl Botes made a double substitution, bringing in Sylvia Kabene and Joanita Ainembabazi for Viola Nambi and Sandra Nabweteme, respectively.
Kabene, making her first appearance, had an immediate impact, helping Uganda regain the lead in the 77th minute. Zaina Nandede started the attack from the right wing, using her speed to beat her marker before delivering a cross to Kabene, who calmly slotted the ball home.
Angel Auki Kigongo, Zabinah Nambozo, and Agnes Nabukenya, all promoted from the youth teams, were also given their debuts for the senior team later in the match.
The Crested Cranes held their ground in the closing minutes to secure the win. The two teams will meet again this Wednesday. These matches are part of Uganda’s preparations for upcoming competitive fixtures next year.
