UPDF Offers Financial Aid and Accountability Following Tragic Agago District Shooting

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has provided financial aid to the families impacted by the unfortunate shooting on October 20, 2024, in Paimol village, Agago District.

The incident, involving Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier Private Ameny Bonny, resulted in three fatalities and left three others wounded.

Through Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the Deputy CDF, the CDF delivered financial support of five million Ugandan shillings to each bereaved family and three million shillings to the injured. “We deeply regret what occurred,” Lt Gen Okiding stated, extending an apology on behalf of the UPDF. He reaffirmed the UPDF’s dedication to assisting the victims and ensuring justice is upheld.

Lt Gen Okiding also urged local parents to prioritize their children’s education, noting, “Education is essential for competition in Uganda,” and encouraged them to make use of government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model to fight poverty, especially through agricultural programs.

Brig Gen Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, commended the community for its role in maintaining peace, particularly in efforts to curb cattle rustling. However, he stressed the importance of addressing the prevalent issues of poverty and hunger in the area.

Agago District Chairperson, Mr. Opio Leonard, expressed appreciation for the UPDF’s accountability, saying, “From covering funeral expenses to fulfilling their financial promise and issuing an apology, this is an uncommon and praiseworthy act.”

The victims of the shooting were identified as Akidi Santino (47), Apiyo Sunday (21), and Ajal Florence (16).

Private Ameny Bonny is set to face trial at the Division Court Martial on November 19, 2024, in Paimol village.
