Earlier this week, a team of 26 officers from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities (MTWA) and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) undertook a challenging yet rewarding journey to the Rwenzori Mountains. Their mission was to officially hand over the newly constructed Elena Camp and state-of-the-art mountaineering equipment, a significant step toward enhancing the mountain tourism experience in Uganda.
Representing the Permanent Secretary, Ms. Jackline Nyiracyiza (Acting Commissioner for Museums and Monuments) handed over Elena Camp to the Executive Director of UWA, represented by Mr. Stephen Masaba (Director of Tourism and Business Development). During the handover ceremony, Ms. Nyiracyiza emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in advancing the tourism sector. She urged continued efforts to improve facilities and ensure Uganda remains a top destination for adventure tourism.
Elena Camp, situated 4,500 meters above sea level, is now fully equipped with facilities to accommodate 34 tourists and 36 support staff. The camp boasts a dining room, kitchen, stores, steady water supply, electricity, and fully furnished beds with mattresses, addressing the long-standing challenge of limited accommodation in the mountains. In addition, the ministry provided advanced hiking and safety gear, including static and dynamic ropes, crampons, ice axes, modern rescue stretchers, oxygen bags, carabiner clips, and cameras to enhance safety and the overall visitor experience.
The team also inspected several boardwalks constructed by MTWA in challenging areas such as those between Nyabitaba and John Matte Camps and Bujuku. These efforts aim to improve accessibility and ensure safety for hikers navigating the difficult terrain. Further boardwalks are under construction, showcasing the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the Rwenzori experience.
Of the 26 officers who embarked on this adventure, 12 successfully reached Margherita Camp, standing at an altitude of 5,109 meters above sea level. Their achievement highlighted the resilience and teamwork that made this expedition possible. The Permanent Secretary commended the UWA ground team, led by Warden George Busingye, for ensuring logistical and physical support throughout the journey.
This milestone underscores the government’s dedication to promoting sustainable tourism and adventure in Uganda. The successful handover of Elena Camp and the provision of modern equipment mark a new chapter in the transformation of the Rwenzori Mountains into a premier adventure tourism destination. By enhancing safety, comfort, and accessibility, Uganda continues to solidify its position as a hub for exceptional travel experiences.
