Speaker Anita Among has assured the public of the government’s commitment to prioritizing public healthcare to enhance service delivery.
Speaking on Tuesday during the official launch of a free medical camp at Bukedea Comprehensive School, organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Bukedea District Local Government and the Anita Foundation, Among expressed her dedication to improving healthcare services.
“I thank God that today our dream has come true. As Parliament, we shall support the Ministry of Health to improve healthcare. I love issues of health, and I am happy we have brought health services nearer to the people, proving it to be a people-centered health sector,” Among stated.
Recently, Speaker Among inaugurated Bukedea Teaching Hospital, a state-of-the-art, non-profit facility that complements government efforts by offering health services at subsidized costs.
Among emphasized that the NRM government has made health a priority in recent years by recruiting more specialized professionals, improving medics’ welfare, and ensuring adequate medical supplies.
“As leaders, we are called to support government efforts and serve humanity. Let us continue to serve our communities,” she added.
Dr. Ben Watmon, the chairperson of the health camp organizing committee and Director of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, praised Speaker Among for bringing healthcare closer to the people.
“In most cases, health workers wait for patients in health facilities, and many patients cannot reach them. But you [Speaker] have brought the services closer, bridging that gap,” Dr. Watmon remarked.
One of the beneficiaries, Juliet Akayo from Magoro sub-county in Katakwi District, shared her gratitude. Diagnosed with cervical cancer in Soroti, she had been unable to afford treatment in Kampala.
“This is a chance for me to meet doctors from the Uganda Cancer Institute and get treatment at no cost,” Akayo said.
The health camp, running until Friday, 25 January 2025, has attracted several health specialists and institutions, including Mulago National Referral Hospital, Uganda Heart Institute (UHI), Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, Uganda Red Cross Society, Uganda AIDS Commission, and regional referral hospitals from Kiruddu, Kawempe, Mbale, and Soroti.
The event was also attended by Members of Parliament from the Parliamentary Health Committee, led by their chairperson, Hon. Dr. Joseph Ruyonga.
