NRM Supporters in Ankole Turn Up in Large Numbers for Final Register Update Ahead of 2026 Primaries

NRM supporters in the Ankole sub-region have turned out in impressive numbers for the final phase of the register display and update ahead of the party’s primary elections, which will determine its flag bearers for the 2026 polls.

According to Hon. Arimpa Kigyagi, Vice Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, the exercise has been well received, especially by young people and new members in the sampled areas of Rwebihuro, Kacence West in Kyakiika Division, and Kyiyanja Zone in Ruharo, Mbarara City.

“We are pleased to see a significant number of new members joining our yellow books, and we anticipate a smooth and successful internal election process,” Kigyagi stated.

“This marks the final opportunity for NRM supporters to have their names added to the party register, an exercise that initially commenced in 2015. Those who were previously omitted, including students, now have a chance to officially become NRM members,” he added.

The four-day exercise, which began on Wednesday, 29th January, is set to conclude on Saturday, with each village conducting a community gathering (Baraza) to verify and confirm the legitimacy of individuals listed in the register.

Kigyagi explained, “Residents will convene in village barazas where all registered names will be read out. The names of deceased individuals will be removed, while those who have shifted allegiance from other political parties will be welcomed and will take an oath of allegiance.”

Following the display process, Kigyagi further noted, “We will finalize the digitization of new members and their details to ensure the updated register is ready for the upcoming internal elections.”
