The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Philip Mpango, met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to Tanzania, Hon. (Retired) Colonel Fred Mwesigye, for discussions at the Chamwino State House in Dodoma on February 13, 2025.
During their meeting, the Vice President highlighted the deep historical and brotherly ties between Tanzania and Uganda. He reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to continued collaboration with Uganda on various international platforms, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the East African Community.
He also emphasized the importance of strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations by increasing trade, advancing joint agricultural research, sharing expertise on modern farming techniques and drought-resistant crops, and working together to control transboundary diseases.
Additionally, the Vice President outlined Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and energy to support trade and investment. These efforts include the construction of the Mwalimu Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam, the development of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), improvements at the Dar es Salaam Port, and the implementation of digital systems for cargo handling and transportation to facilitate the efficient movement of goods.
On his part, Ambassador Mwesigye expressed gratitude to the Tanzanian government and its leadership for upholding the legacy of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who played a crucial role in supporting Uganda and other African nations in their struggles for independence and freedom.
He also thanked Tanzania for its cooperation in facilitating the transportation of Uganda’s oil through the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) from Hoima to Chongoleani in the Tanga Region. He noted that even before oil production begins, the pipeline’s construction has already brought significant economic and social benefits to the communities along its route.
