On February 22, 2025, the Uganda Consulate in Arusha, in partnership with TuskerLite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, hosted an energizing shake-up run in Moshi, bringing together runners from Uganda and Kenya. The run aimed to promote the highly anticipated Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, which will be officially launched during the three-day 23rd edition of the Kili Marathon.
Mr. Wekesa warmly welcomed the participants and encouraged them to register early for the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, set to be officially launched on February 23rd at the Kili Marathon. He emphasized the importance of early registration to secure accommodation and shared that he had negotiated with Uganda Airlines to offer an attractive travel package for participants attending the event.
In his address, Mr. Wekesa recounted the history of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, which started with just 800 participants and has since grown to about 4,000 runners in recent editions. He commended the Uganda Consulate in Arusha for its tireless efforts in promoting Uganda as a tourism destination through initiatives like this and expressed his commitment to continued collaboration with the consulate on future projects.
Ambassador Anne Katusiime expressed her gratitude to the Kenyan delegation for their enthusiastic support of the Rwenzori Marathon by wearing the official kit during the shake-up run. She also thanked Mr. Wekesa for involving the consulate in the Kili Marathon, emphasizing that tourism is a key driver in Uganda’s national development strategy, with a goal to grow the economy tenfold in the next decade.
Amb. Katusiime further acknowledged Mr. Wekesa’s pivotal role in the creation of the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon and encouraged participants to engage in the event, fostering ongoing collaboration between the Kilimanjaro and Rwenzori marathons.
