Members of Parliament have united in offering prayers and well wishes to Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, who has been hospitalized for the past 12 days.
During the plenary session on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, Speaker Anita Among led the House in a moment of prayer for the Pontiff’s recovery.
“The Pope is said to be suffering from pneumonia. We join millions of faithful worldwide in praying for his swift healing,” she stated.
“On behalf of the Parliament of Uganda and personally, we stand in solidarity with the global Catholic community and all people of goodwill in extending our sincere wishes for the Holy Father’s recovery. May the Lord restore Pope Francis’ health,” she added.
Hon. Atkins Katusabe, the MP for Bukonjo County West, expressed that as a devoted Catholic, he is also praying for the Pope’s speedy recovery.
Hon. Francis Mwijukye, the Buhweju County MP, shared that he is among the few Ugandans who have had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis and is keeping him in his prayers.
“We ask for God’s continued grace, mercy, and healing, and above all, that He strengthens and gives hope to people around the world,” he remarked.
Hon. Lawrence Biyika (NRM, Ora County, Zombo) acknowledged the Pope’s significant contributions to environmental conservation.
“The Holy Father has been a strong advocate for environmental protection throughout his tenure and continues to champion it through his encyclical letters, such as Laudato Si’,” he noted.
Meanwhile, media reports indicate that Pope Francis, who is battling severe pneumonia, remains in a critical yet stable condition and has not suffered any further respiratory complications.
The 88-year-old Pontiff has now spent 12 nights at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, marking the longest period of hospitalization during his papacy.
