Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has questioned the Judiciary over the mismanagement of funds and the accumulation of arrears. In the financial year 2023/24, the Judiciary accumulated arrears amounting to Shs13.371 billion.
During the same session, it was revealed that the Judiciary spent Shs790 million on arrear payments, despite the funds not being included in the institution’s annual budget. The committee tasked the Judiciary to explain the source of the funds used.
The committee highlighted that the delayed payment of arrears negatively affects creditors who rely on timely payments to meet their financial obligations, resulting in strained relations.
