On Wednesday, March 11, 2025, Uganda’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Amb. Paul Amoru, took a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties with South Africa. In a meeting with the Director for Citizenship and Immigration Control at Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, discussions focused on following up on key decisions made during the Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) meeting held in South Africa in February 2023.
A major highlight of the discussions was the progress on negotiations for visa exemptions between the two nations. If successful, holders of Ordinary Ugandan and South African passports will no longer require visas to travel between the two countries, marking a milestone in fostering ease of movement and strengthening economic and diplomatic relations.
The meeting was also attended by Mr. Solis, the Acting Head of Mission at the South African High Commission, who provided an encouraging update. He confirmed that South African President H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa had granted presidential clearance for the Minister of Home Affairs to sign two migration-related agreements. The timing of the official signing will be determined through consultations between both governments.
With this development, the High Commission remains actively engaged in ensuring the successful implementation of these agreements, paving the way for a future of seamless travel and enhanced cooperation between Uganda and South Africa.
