Veteran Journalist Shaka Ssali Passes Away at 71

Renowned journalist and broadcaster Shaka Ssali, longtime host of Straight Talk Africa on Voice of America (VOA), has passed away at 71 in the United States. He died on Thursday night following surgery for an undisclosed ailment.

A native of Kabale, Uganda, Ssali was a trailblazer in African journalism, best known for launching and hosting Straight Talk Africa since August 2000. Through in-depth discussions with leaders, analysts, and citizens, he championed democracy, governance, and press freedom across the continent. His unwavering commitment to truth and accountability earned him immense respect.

Ssali retired from VOA in May 2021, leaving behind a legacy of incisive journalism and a passion for empowering Africa’s youth. His influence extended beyond media, notably moderating Uganda’s 2016 presidential debate.

Tributes have poured in from global leaders and colleagues. Former Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda described Ssali as a childhood friend and a passionate advocate for African causes. Buganda Kingdom Premier Charles Peter Mayiga hailed him as an accomplished journalist whose wisdom and dedication to truth will inspire generations.

As he often said, “Let’s keep the African hope alive.” May his soul rest in peace.
