UEDCL Takes Over Umeme: A New Era in Uganda’s Power Distribution

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) Managing Director, Paul Mwesigwa, has outlined the company’s transition plan as it takes over Umeme’s electricity distribution network. UEDCL, governed by the Electricity Act of 1999, has held an asset ownership license since 2005 and has been managing rural distribution networks alongside Umeme’s operations.

With the government’s decision not to renew Umeme’s concession beyond February 2025, UEDCL has been preparing for a smooth takeover. Over the years, the company has successfully taken over multiple concessions, demonstrating its efficiency and commitment to service delivery. Key focus areas include improving network reliability, digital transformation, and financial sustainability.

The government has provided financial resources to facilitate the transition, ensuring continued operations without service disruptions. Customers will still access services through existing platforms, and Umeme staff are being integrated into UEDCL’s workforce. UEDCL remains committed to maintaining and enhancing Uganda’s electricity distribution network to support national development.
