Hon. Matia Kasaija Highlights Uganda’s Commitment to Combating Money Laundering at 49th ESAAMLG Meeting

The Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Hon. Matia Kasaija, opened the 49th ESAAMLG Task Force of Senior Officials Meetings, welcoming local and international delegates to Uganda. He extended special recognition to the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister, who attended as the Chief Guest on behalf of the President of Uganda.

Hon. Kasaija reaffirmed Uganda’s strong commitment to combating money laundering and terrorism financing, emphasizing key achievements such as Uganda’s removal from the FATF grey list, amendments to AML/CFT laws, and the strengthening of financial oversight institutions. He highlighted the role of the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), the implementation of a risk-based supervision model, and the ongoing collaboration between public and private sectors in curbing financial crimes.

He commended the progress made in law enforcement, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building initiatives but noted that challenges remain, particularly in emerging financial risks like virtual assets. He expressed appreciation for ESAAMLG’s support and reiterated Uganda’s commitment to regional cooperation in fighting financial crime.
