On the sidelines of the Extraordinary Summit of Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) held in Kampala, Uganda, IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu held high-level consultations with H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Their discussions centered on the prevailing peace and security dynamics, as well as the socioeconomic transformation of the region.
Addressing the Ministerial Meeting of the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs), Dr. Workneh emphasized IGAD’s deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Somalia and the pressing challenges facing AUSSOM, especially amid growing threats from Al Shabaab. He praised the resilience and sacrifice of peacekeeping troops, acknowledging their vital role in Somalia’s stabilization.
Dr. Workneh commended the government of Somalia under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for its steadfast efforts toward peace, despite constrained resources and operational setbacks. He also highlighted IGAD’s commitment to practical solutions, including support for cross-border operations and logistical reinforcements.
The Executive Secretary called on the international community and donors to urgently close the funding gap under Resolution 2719 and reinforced the need for joint contingency planning. IGAD remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that Somalia achieves lasting peace an outcome critical to the broader stability of the Horn of Africa.
