The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), through its Mining Unit, has commenced a week-long environmental compliance inspection at marble and limestone mining sites in Moroto District. The inspection, running from June 30th to July 4th, 2025, seeks to ensure that mining activities in the region align with environmental regulations and safety standards.
The team of Environment Inspectors is focusing on verifying compliance with Certificate of Approval (COA) conditions, as well as broader environmental and mining laws. The inspections are also intended to identify potential environmental and safety hazards such as unstable rock formations, lack of proper safety equipment, and unsafe mining practices.
According to officials, the exercise aims to safeguard not only the environment but also the health and safety of workers and nearby communities. Inspectors are further assessing whether mining operations are being conducted in accordance with industry best practices and safety procedures.
