NRM Primaries Set for Thursday in All 72,000 Villages, Says Tanga Odoi

The NRM primary elections will take place on Thursday, 17th this week, as earlier scheduled, the NRM Electoral Commission has confirmed today in a press conference.

The Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi, was responding to media reports suggesting that elections were postponed to next week.

“There were a lot of rumours that elections were postponed, but we are going to have these elections for members of parliament on Thursday, 17th, in all the 72,000 villages. To those who are candidates, please prepare as per the guidelines issued by the electoral commission,” Dr Tanga Odoi said.

According to Dr Tanga, members will on polling day convene at the venue by 10 am, and names will be read to confirm attendance. The voting will take place between 12 noon to 2 pm. The voting by eligible voters is by lining up behind posters or agents of the candidates.

The NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong said only members in the village register will be allowed to vote.

“If you are a candidate, don’t fail because you think there is no register. You will fail on your own because all the villages will have their registers by Thursday morning, and we shall strictly use them to choose our leaders. If you are not in the register, you will not participate,” Todwong said.

He added that the party register books are being transported to all the districts before they are distributed to the sub-counties and to all the villages.

Todwong cautioned the candidates against dividing the population using religion and tribes.

“We have received reports of our members using religion, tribal sentiments and a lot of money. We want to warn them to stop. Our party members should be civil and respect each other,” Todwong said.

Electoral Guidelines

After counting, the presiding officer at every village will publicly announce the results and issue a declaration of results form duly signed by all agents of the candidates.
