Kenya kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over DR Congo in front of a fired-up home crowd at Nyayo National Stadium.
The breakthrough came in the 67th minute. Austin Odhiambo, with time and space just outside the box, rifled in a stunning left-footed strike that lit up the stadium and sealed all three points for the Harambee Stars.
But while Odhiambo made the scoresheet, it was Alpha Onyango who really ran the show. The Gor Mahia midfielder bossed the game from start to finish closing down Congolese attacks, stringing passes together, and setting the rhythm for Kenya. He deservedly walked away with the Man of the Match honours and the loudest cheer of the night.
DR Congo, winners of the tournament twice before, gave Kenya plenty to think about in the dying minutes. But the hosts stood firm, with their defence soaking up pressure and the goalkeeper making sure nothing slipped throug.
The result gives Kenya a valuable three points in Group B, which also includes Zambia and Libya. DR Congo now find themselves needing a win in their next match to keep their hopes alive.
