Uganda and Kenya have resolved to eliminate all the existing tariff and non tariff barriers that have been hindering trade between the two countries.
This was during a meeting held between the State Minister for Trade Hon. Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi and his Kenyan counterpart H.E Lee Kinyanjui at Mbale Resort Hotel from 29th to 30th August 2025
The two ministers directed that all products originating between Uganda and Kenya are to be treated as transfers and not imports and will no longer attract any duties. They agreed to remove all discriminatory excise duties, levies, and other charges of equivalent effects and to fully implement all trade related commitments under the EAC Treaty and Protocols.
The ministers started with a visit to the Uganda and Kenya borders at Malaba and Busia, where they convened meetings with border agencies to address the trade barriers, including the congestion, the long qeues, among others.
