A tragic road crash claimed the life of a police officer in the early hours of Friday morning at Kasanvu along the Mutukula-Kyotera road.
The accident, which occurred at around 4:00 AM, involved a police Land Cruiser (UP 2914 T) that had parked near a checkpoint with officers on board, and a speeding Mercedes-Benz trailer (T824 DXF/T529 EFJ). According to reports, the trailer, being driven by a turn-man while the main driver rested, lost control, rammed into the stationary police vehicle, and came to a stop on top of it.
The driver of the police vehicle died instantly, while three other officers sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention. The turn-man was arrested on the spot, while efforts are underway to apprehend the main driver who fled the scene.
Police have condemned the dangerous practice of allowing turn-men to operate heavy trucks, warning that it puts lives at risk. Road users, especially truck drivers, are urged to observe speed limits, exercise caution during night travel, and prioritize safety.
Authorities extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
