Kenya Mourns Raila Odinga: A Champion of Democracy and Reform

Kenya is mourning the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga, a veteran politician, former Prime Minister, and one of the country’s most influential political figures. Odinga, aged 80, died today, Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at an Ayurvedic eye hospital and research centre in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam District, Kerala, India. Reports indicate that he suffered cardiac failure during his morning walk on the hospital grounds. The Government of Kenya is yet to issue an official statement.

For over five decades, Raila Odinga was a symbol of democracy, resilience, and reform. His political journey was defined by his relentless pursuit of freedom, justice, and good governance. Many Kenyans credit him for shaping the democratic space the country enjoys today.

“Raila Odinga fought for our democracy. Kenya has lost a true hero. The freedom we enjoy now is a result of his struggle. Without him, Kenya would be like Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, or Rwanda,” one mourner remarked.

As Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, Odinga championed landmark political, social, and economic reforms, including the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. His leadership was marked by a strong focus on public service delivery, environmental conservation, and prudent resource management.

Before his tenure as Prime Minister, he served as a Member of Parliament for over 20 years, beginning in 1992. During this time, he held key ministerial portfolios such as Minister for Energy and Minister for Roads, Public Works, and Housing, where he championed energy accessibility, road infrastructure development, and affordable housing. He also promoted green energy policies, particularly investments in geothermal and hydroelectric power.

Between 2018 and 2023, Odinga served as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA). He was instrumental in securing political commitment for continental projects and promoting consensus among African nations on regional integration and connectivity.

Throughout his career, Raila Odinga earned recognition both locally and internationally for his visionary leadership, diplomacy, and commitment to social justice. He was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH) of Kenya, the Golden Jubilee Award, the Greater Good Award, and the Global Leadership Award.

Raila Odinga leaves behind a powerful legacy as a freedom fighter, reformist, and statesman whose life’s work reshaped Kenya’s political and democratic landscape.
