143 Inmates Serving Minor Sentences Pardoned by President Museveni

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has granted pardon to 143 prisoners convicted of minor offences. The group consists of 137 men and six women, all of whom were serving sentences for petty crimes and were fully convicted not on remand or awaiting trial.

The President exercised his prerogative of mercy under Article 121(4)(a) of the Constitution, following the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

According to the Prisons Service, the Sentence Management Review Committee reviews and submits annual lists of inmates eligible for pardon, typically ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 candidates.
