The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) has graduated 600 students at its 18th graduation ceremony held in Nakawa, Kampala.
The graduates received diplomas and certificates in engineering, information technology, business and management.
The Minister of Information and Communications Technology and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, congratulated the graduates and told them that the job market now demands strong digital skills. He said technology is key to Uganda’s development and encouraged them to use their training to solve challenges in sectors such as health, education, agriculture and tourism.
Dr. Baryomunsi outlined government priorities in the ICT sector, including expanding internet backbone infrastructure, strengthening digital skills training, developing local innovation, promoting business outsourcing and improving cybersecurity.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, said local digital systems such as the Education Management Information System, the Integrated Hospital Management Information System and the Parish Development Model Information System are improving service delivery. She also noted the growth of business process outsourcing companies under the national policy.
Uganda Communications Commission Executive Director, Hon. George William Nyombi Thembo, said UICT plays a major role in training the country’s ICT workforce. He pledged continued support through infrastructure, digital learning facilities and innovation programs.

UICT Principal, Dr. Fredrick Kitoogo, said the graduating class included 183 female students, 417 male students and 10 learners with disabilities. He added that over 56,000 Ugandans have been trained by the institute, with most graduates either employed or self-employed.
