I am Still NRM — Mbabazi Calls for Unity, Voting and Peaceful Elections.

By Shivan Ayebare

Former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi has urged Ugandans to turn up in large numbers to vote, describing the act as both a constitutional right and a demonstration of citizens’ ownership of the country.

Mbabazi said Uganda belongs to its people and that political authority rests with them. He noted that the Constitution is clear that leadership must come from Ugandans and can only be exercised through the ballot.

“Even if you are sick, make sure you go and vote,” Mbabazi said. “Your vote chooses the leader. Voting is an expression of your ownership of this country. Low voter turnout weakens democracy.”

Warning Against Sectarianism

Mbabazi cautioned against the growing tendency of political divisions along tribal and religious lines, especially during election periods, saying such practices are harmful to the country’s future.

Reflecting on Uganda’s history, he said leaders of his generation including President Yoweri Museveni and former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda challenged earlier regimes because of sectarian politics based on tribe and religion.

“Sectarianism has divided our people, weakened institutions and slowed national progress,” he said, calling on Ugandans to reject divisive politics in favor of unity and national development.

Condemns Electoral Violence

Mbabazi also strongly condemned electoral violence, stressing that violence has no place in a democratic society. He said elections should be about competing ideas, not force.

“The Constitution provides clear mechanisms for handling electoral complaints,” he said. “Anyone dissatisfied with the process or results should follow lawful channels. Violence and chaos are never justified.”

He warned against individuals who may attempt to incite unrest after losing elections and urged citizens to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding.

Reaffirms Loyalty to NRM and Support for Museveni

Addressing his political standing, Mbabazi clarified that he has never left the National Resistance Movement (NRM), despite having contested against President Museveni in the 2016 presidential election.

“I am NRM. I once contested against President Museveni, but I have no intention of leaving the party,” he said.

He credited President Museveni with providing stability, peace and continuity, describing him as a central figure in the NRM’s vision.

“Museveni is a custodian of the NRM vision, not only for Uganda but also for the region and the continent, politically and economically,” Mbabazi said.

He concluded by saying that voting for President Museveni represents continuity, stability and development, and called on Ugandans to participate peacefully in the electoral process for the good of the nation.
