IGAD Welcomes Back Sudan to the Regional Bloc

By Catherine Nambi

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed the decision of the Republic of the Sudan to resume its full participation in the Organisation after two years of its withdrawal from the regional bloc.

Sudan suspended its IGAD membership in 2024 following an IGAD invitation of the leader of the Sudan’s paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces to a Kampala meeting.

In a news statement the IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, described Sudan’s return as a reaffirmation of regional solidarity and collective commitment to peace, stability, and cooperation across the region.

He noted that, as a founding Member State, Sudan’s renewed engagement strengthens IGAD’s unity and enhances its capacity to address shared regional priorities.

The Executive Secretary expressed deep appreciation to H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti and Chairperson of IGAD, for his leadership and constructive engagement in guiding the process.

He commended the Chairperson’s steadfast commitment to dialogue and consensus building in advancing regional cohesion.

The Secretariat reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the Republic of the Sudan in advancing a peaceful resolution of the current challenges and in supporting a secure and prosperous future for the Sudanese people and the wider region.
