UBC Journalist Sarah Mawerere Clinches 2025 Wildlife Protection Award for Spotlight on Women Rangers

UBCs Sarah Mawerere has won the Wildlife Protection (Print/Online) category at the 2025 Uganda Conservation Media Awards.


The award recognizes her article titled “Courage in the Wild: How Uganda’s Women Rangers Guard Nature and Change Minds,” published on UBC’s website on October 28, 2025.


The piece profiles female wildlife rangers in Uganda, detailing their daily patrols to protect wildlife, their efforts to address human wildlife conflict and poaching, and their role in shifting community perceptions about conservation.

It includes an interview with Private Akello and highlights how the women balance their professional duties with family responsibilities.
The Uganda Conservation Media Awards, organized by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in partnership with WildAid, honor outstanding journalism that promotes wildlife conservation. The trophy was presented at a ceremony attended by conservation stakeholders.
