The National Organisation of Trade Unions launched a Migrant Workers’ Exploitation and Abuse Rights Desk aimed at supporting Ugandan migrant workers who face mistreatment while working abroad. The initiative seeks to provide a channel through which affected workers can report cases of abuse and receive assistance through the relevant authorities back home.
The organisation noted that many Ugandan youths working in the Middle East have in recent years reported cases of exploitation and mistreatment. However, a significant number of these cases have not been addressed through the proper support systems.
Through the newly established desk, the trade union body hopes to strengthen protection for migrant workers by ensuring that reported cases are followed up with the appropriate government agencies and stakeholders responsible for labour and migrant welfare.
