Retired United States Army Lieutenant General Michael Thomas Flynn delivered a lecture on leadership to senior officers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces at Speke Resort Hotel Munyonyo in Kampala.
The session brought together commandants from the National Defence College – Uganda, the Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, directing staff, as well as members of the Joint Staff Headquarters of the UPDF.
In his presentation, Lt Gen Flynn highlighted that effective leadership extends beyond authority and rank, emphasizing that genuine leadership is rooted in integrity, bravery, strategic foresight, and the capacity to motivate others toward a shared goal.
Lt Gen Flynn has been in Uganda over the past few days, during which he held high-level engagements with the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Speaking on behalf of the officers, the Commandant of the National Defence College–Uganda, Alex Olupot, expressed appreciation to Lt Gen Flynn for sharing valuable insights drawn from his distinguished service in the United States Armed Forces.
“These lessons resonate strongly with us as officers entrusted with the duty of protecting our nation while also contributing to regional and global peace and stability,” Brig Gen Olupot said.
He noted that the insights shared were especially relevant to officers responsible for national security and for supporting peace efforts at both regional and international levels.
He further stated that the lecture reinforced core values such as patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and international cooperation, which remain central to the ideological foundation of UPDF officers.
Lt Gen Flynn’s military career spans over three decades, during which he held senior intelligence and command roles in the United States Army, including serving as Director of the Defence Intelligence Agency from 2012 to 2014. He later served as National Security Adviser under U.S. President Donald Trump.
