Police in Kassanda District have launched investigations into the abduction of a three-day-old baby by an unidentified woman who allegedly posed as a medical officer at Kiganda Health Centre IV.
According to reports, the baby’s parents, Muhindo Joachim and Nalubowa Ruth, residents of Katosi Cell in Kiganda Town Council, took their newborn daughter to the facility on 12 March 2026 after she developed complications.
The infant was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where she responded well to treatment. On 14 March 2026, she was transferred to the postnatal ward as she awaited discharge.
However, on 15 March 2026, an unidentified woman reportedly entered the ward disguised as a medical worker. She moved around attending to patients and reviewing their medical notes, creating the impression that she was part of the hospital staff.
When she reached the baby’s bed, she picked up the child and examined her treatment records before informing the mother that the baby’s condition had worsened and required urgent medication that had not yet been administered.
The suspect then handed the mother UGX 10,000 to purchase the alleged medication from a nearby pharmacy. While the mother stepped out to buy the drugs, the woman reportedly took advantage of her absence and fled with the baby.
The incident was reported to police at Kiganda, and investigations are ongoing to trace the suspect and recover the child.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any woman found with a newborn under suspicious circumstances particularly one not known to have been pregnant to the nearest police station.
