The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in collaboration with the Somali National Army (SNA), have successfully concluded a major joint road rehabilitation project along the key supply route connecting Mubarak, Darusalam, and Awdhegle.
The road had deteriorated due to prolonged conflict and harsh conditions. Engineering teams undertook clearing operations, removing debris and overgrown vegetation, and repairing damaged sections to restore safe and dependable access.
Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, Commander of Sector One, noted that the project plays a critical role in consolidating recent security achievements and advancing wider stabilization efforts.
“This road will not only enhance military logistics but also enable communities to access markets, healthcare services, and other essential facilities,” he stated.
Awdhegle community leader Shuaib Osman welcomed the development, saying the improved road will lower transportation costs, ease mobility, and strengthen links between neighboring towns.
Colonel Owiny Akena, Commander of Battle Group 44, emphasized that secure and well-maintained supply routes are vital for operational success and the safety of civilians.
He reaffirmed continued cooperation with Somali forces and local communities to promote sustainable peace and development.
The rehabilitation project follows a series of coordinated operations that secured Mubarak and nearby areas, including Darusalam.
