Agnes Nandutu Convicted Over Karamoja Iron Sheets

The Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court has convicted Bududa Woman MP and former State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Agnes Nandutu, for dealing in suspect property.

The court, presided over by Justice Jane Okuo, found that Nandutu knowingly received and retained government iron sheets meant for vulnerable communities in Karamoja.

Prosecution told the court that between June and July 2022, Nandutu took possession of 2,000 pre-painted iron sheets marked “Office of the Prime Minister.” The sheets had been procured under a Shs39.9 billion supplementary budget for relief and community support in Karamoja.

Court heard that following a presidential launch of the distribution exercise in Moroto, a balance of iron sheets remained in stores in Namanve. Nandutu was later informed that 2,000 sheets had been allocated to her, allegedly for landslide victims.

She accepted the allocation, financed their transportation, and instructed her assistant to collect them. The sheets were initially taken to a private home in Wakiso before being moved to her residence in Seeta, Mukono, where they were stored.

Investigations conducted in March 2023 led to the recovery of 1,617 iron sheets from her farm. She did not account for the remaining 383.

The court ruled that she had reason to believe the iron sheets were irregularly obtained from a government programme and convicted her under the Anti-Corruption Act.

Her bail was subsequently cancelled, and she was remanded in custody. Sentencing is scheduled for April 10, 2026.

The case was prosecuted by Chief State Attorney David Bisamunyu and Senior State Attorney Innocent Aleto.
