Uganda High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA), Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), and private sector stakeholders, has commenced a Familiarisation Trip to Uganda for top Canadian tour operators, media influencers, and travel agents from 9th to 18th April 2026.
A delegation of 14 senior executives from prominent Canadian tourism and travel companies arrived at Entebbe International Airport this morning, 8th April 2026, marking the commencement of the high-level visit. The delegation was received by Ambassador Allan Kajik, Uganda’s High Commissioner in Ottawa, Mr. Jimmy Kigozi, Commissioner in the MTWA, and other senior officials from MOFA and UTB.
At the arrival ceremony, Ambassador Kajik underscored the strategic significance of this initiative, aimed at augmenting Uganda’s visibility and competitiveness in the Canadian tourism market by providing first-hand exposure to the country’s premier tourism offerings. The Familiarisation Trip will showcase Uganda’s flagship attractions, including wildlife, culture, nature, and adventure, with a special focus on community-based tourism and conservation initiatives, which resonate profoundly with Canadian travelers.
Ms. Agnes Birungi, Head of Economic and Commercial Diplomacy (ECD) at the High Commission, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming the Canadian delegation, highlighting Uganda’s unparalleled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. She said Uganda is a veritable gem, replete with opportunities for immersive tourism experiences, which are a favourite for Canadians.
During the visit, the delegation will engage in substantive B2B meetings with Ugandan tour operators, government officials, and stakeholders to promote Uganda as a premier destination for Canadian travelers. The program will feature visits to iconic attractions such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the Source of the Nile in Jinja.
Ms. Margaret Kafeero, Head of Public Diplomacy in MOFA, conveyed confidence that the Familiarisation Trip would not only highlight Uganda’s tourism potential but also catalyze sectoral growth, fostering enduring partnerships and collaborations.
Tourist arrivals from Canada have registered a steady increase, rising from 7,542 in 2022 to 9,688 in 2024, representing a notable 28% growth. Ambassador Kajik affirmed the High Commission’s commitment to building on this momentum, targeting over 20,000 Canadian visitors by 2028, capitalizing on opportunities in adventure tourism, wildlife, and cultural experiences.
According to Mr. Jimmy Kigozi of MTWA, Canada constitutes a vital source market for Uganda, given the propensity of Canadian tourists to indulge in high-end experiences and extended stays, thereby generating substantial revenue for the tourism sector.
The Familiarisation Trip is poised to enhance awareness and confidence among Canadian tour operators, stimulate the development of bespoke tour itineraries, and reinforce Uganda’s destination branding in Canada and North America in general.
