Residents and traders in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, have asked the government to construct a modern market and relocate the municipal landfill.
They raised the concerns during the National Clean-Up Day exercise at Njeru Market and the UEB Ghetto area.
Residents, local leaders and factory workers took part in the exercise, using wheelbarrows, shovels and other equipment to clear garbage from the market and surrounding areas.
Traders said Njeru Market is congested and becomes difficult to keep clean during the rainy season. They want a larger market with adequate space and proper sanitation facilities.
Residents also want the municipal landfill relocated, saying its current location is close to homes.
Njeru Town Clerk Paddy Kakumba said the government has acquired two acres of land for a new waste disposal site.
He said the municipality is waiting for approval from the National Environment Management Authority, NEMA, before the project proceeds.
Deputy Minister in the Office of the Deputy President Diana Mutasingwa raised concern about sanitation at Njeru Market and asked local authorities to enforce regulations on waste disposal.
She also cautioned traders against keeping animals in and around the market, citing hygiene concerns and animal waste.
Mutasingwa urged residents, traders and local authorities to keep their surroundings clean beyond organised clean-up exercises.
