The government will begin providing households living in landslide-prone areas of the Bugisu sub-region with UGX 18 million each from Wednesday, October 21, 2026, to facilitate their relocation to safer areas.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja following an emergency meeting with Members of Parliament and local government leaders from Bugisu held in Kampala on Tuesday.
Under the arrangement, each beneficiary household will receive a one-off payment to purchase land in a safer location of their choice, either within Bugisu or elsewhere in Uganda.
The relocation exercise follows a Cabinet meeting held on October 5, 2026, during which President Yoweri Museveni directed the Prime Minister to ensure the immediate resettlement of people living in landslide-prone areas.
An assessment conducted by the Office of the Prime Minister’s Ministry of Disaster Preparedness found that more than 13,000 people are living in areas considered vulnerable to landslides.
The government has allocated UGX 62 billion for the resettlement exercise, which is intended to move affected households away from the risk zones and prevent further loss of life.
Nabbanja said she would travel to Mbale on Wednesday, beginning with Namisindwa District, to oversee the implementation of the programme.
The meeting was also attended by Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama, ministers, technical officials and other regional leaders.
Members of Parliament from Bugisu welcomed the government’s decision, saying the relocation would help protect communities living under the threat of landslides.
