Police Investigate Attack on Hon. Mwijukye Francis, MP for Buhweju Constituency

The Greater Bushenyi and Buhweju CPS Territorial Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding an attack on Hon. Mwijukye Francis, MP for Buhweju Constituency, which resulted in his injury. The incident occurred on May 12, 2024, at 3:30 pm in Nyakishana Sub-county.

Hon. Mwijukye Francis was responding to a land conflict after receiving a complaint from churchgoers at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church and members of the Rwamabare Farmers Association. They claimed that their church was under threat of removal or demolition by their neighbor, Kamugisha Frank, with whom they are disputing ownership of the church land. Upon arriving at the scene, Hon. Mwijukye was confronted by a rival group armed with sticks. In the ensuing violent confrontation, he sustained severe head injuries and was promptly taken to Nsiika Health Centre 4 by the police for medical attention.

It is essential for the public to recognize that legislators serve as representatives of their constituents and bear the responsibility of Parliament. Therefore, any form of violence or threats against them undermines the foundation of our democracy. Such acts of impunity against our legislators will not be condoned.
