Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga Inaugurates 16th CDF Cup, Emphasizing Physical Fitness for UPDF Soldiers.

The Commander of Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, officially inaugurated the 16th Edition of the CDF (Chief of Defence Forces) Cup Tournament today.

Organized by the Mountain Division, this two-week event will feature 19 Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) formations and units competing in football and netball.

Lt Gen Muhanga emphasized the critical importance of physical fitness in preparing soldiers for the demands of military service, encouraging the youth to make regular exercise a priority for their health. “Many young people under 25 are unable to join the army due to poor physical fitness. I urge you to stay active and maintain good health,” he noted, underscoring fitness as a crucial factor in army recruitment.

Maj Gen Richard Otto, Commander of the Mountain Infantry Division and Operation Shujaa, acknowledged the significant contributions of President and Commander-in-Chief H.E. Brig Gen Richard Karemire, Joint Staff Officer for Formal Education, Sports, and Culture (JS FESC), outlined the CDF Cup’s goals as promoting physical and mental well-being, discipline, and teamwork within the UPDF. He further mentioned that the tournament seeks to develop sporting talent within the force, enhance professionalism, and strengthen civil-military relations.

Hon Linda Irene, Woman Member of Parliament for Fort Portal City, commended the UPDF for selecting the region to host the tournament and urged the Chief Guest to assist in improving local sports infrastructure.

The tournament, under the theme “Fostering a culture of physical fitness and unity within the UPDF through sports,” kicked off with exciting matches. The Mountain Division secured a 1-0 win over the Marine Brigade in football, while their netball team triumphed over Magamaga with a 61-05 victory.
