President Museveni Lauds Court Martial’s Role in Enhancing National Stability

President Museveni has commended the role of the Court Martial in stabilizing Uganda by addressing gun-related crimes involving civilians. He emphasized that the decision to try such cases in military courts, enacted by the NRM government in 2005, has been critical in managing terrorism and criminal activities. Civilian courts, burdened with extensive backlogs, were unable to handle these cases with the urgency required for national stability.

The President noted that military courts have successfully complemented military operations, particularly in regions like Karamoja, by swiftly prosecuting offenders and ensuring peace. He highlighted the importance of keeping dangerous individuals in custody under legal provisions, thereby protecting the public.

Museveni directed military leadership to audit cases of Karamojong youth in detention, identifying those eligible for pardon while ensuring hardcore criminals remain detained. This strategy, he stated, has been key in maintaining peace and security across Uganda. Below is the full statement issued by President Museveni.
