Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s team, headed by Maj Gen James Birungi, the Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, conducted visits to several prominent Algerian military facilities on Wednesday to explore potential avenues for collaboration.
The facilities visited included the Higher Warfare College, the Staff and Command School, and the Clothing and Bedding facility responsible for military production.
During the visits, Maj Gen Birungi and his delegation, which included Maj Gen Bob Ogiki, the Joint Chief of Staff Policy and Strategy, and Maj Gen Keith Katungi, the Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, held discussions with senior Algerian Generals, identifying opportunities for cooperation and partnerships with Algeria’s military, regarded as one of Africa’s strongest armed forces.
Maj Gen Birungi conveyed regrets on behalf of Gen Kainerugaba for his absence, explaining that the CDF had to return to Kampala to attend to other pressing state obligations.
Nevertheless, the Ugandan delegation was warmly received and engaged in constructive and friendly deliberations.
These visits to the military facilities followed Gen Kainerugaba’s meeting on Tuesday with his Algerian counterpart, General Saïd Chanegriha, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of Algeria’s People’s National Army. During the meeting, they discussed the forthcoming signing of a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Algerian military.
In addition, Gen Kainerugaba had previously toured the Algerian Navy and Air Force headquarters.
