Dr. Musenero Monica, the Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, announced a historic milestone for Uganda’s scientific community during a press briefing. Two locally developed herbal medicines, Tazcov from Busitema University and Vidicine from Kazire Health Products, have successfully undergone clinical trials, proving to be safe and highly effective.
The Science, Technology, and Innovation Secretariat at the Office of the President (STI-OP) revealed the results of the trials, which demonstrated that both Tazcov and Vidicine outperform imported drugs in treating common respiratory tract infections, including influenza types A and B, Covid-19, and respiratory syncytial virus.
This achievement marks a significant step forward for Uganda’s pharmaceutical industry. With the clinical trial results confirming their safety and efficacy, the drugs will now be submitted to the National Drug Authority for full certification. If approved, this will be the first time Ugandan herbal medicines receive such certification, unlocking vast market opportunities both locally and internationally.
Dr. Musenero emphasized the importance of this breakthrough, highlighting its potential to reduce reliance on imported drugs and boost the country’s economy. The success of Tazcov and Vidicine underscores the potential of Ugandan scientists and the value of investing in local innovation.
This milestone not only positions Uganda as a leader in herbal medicine research but also paves the way for further advancements in science and technology, offering hope for affordable and effective healthcare solutions.
