Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar Pays Tribute to the Late President Sam Nujoma and Signs the Condolence Book at the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia

On February 14, 2025, Hon. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, paid a visit to the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia to sign the condolence book in memory of the late former Namibian President, His Excellency Sam Nujoma. Having been warmly received by Honorary Consul of Namibia in Uganda, Godfrey Kirumira, who on behalf of the Government of Namibia, accepted the tribute and led the signing ceremony, the visit was also a reminder about the shared struggles and triumphs that unite African nations in their pursuit of freedom, justice, and development. 

In his remarks, Hon. Odongo reflected on the remarkable life and leadership of President Nujoma, noting that many might not be aware of the late president’s humble beginnings, which played a significant role in shaping his fierce determination to lead the Herero people to independence. He also mentioned how he was a trailblazer in the fight for freedom and his legacy will remain one of the cornerstones of Namibia’s development. Hon. Odongo highlighted how Nujoma’s struggle, vision, and unwavering leadership continue to inspire not only Namibia but also other African nations, including Uganda, where lessons from his leadership have resonated deeply.

Hon. Odongo also shared how the enduring relationship between Uganda and Namibia, emphasizing how Dr. Nujoma’s influence transcended his presidency that even after stepping down, he continued to play an instrumental role in Namibia’s affairs. Hon. Odongo pointed out that Namibia and Uganda are among the 10 countries selected to review the UN systems, an important milestone that showcases both nations’ strong commitment to representing and upholding African values on the global stage.

Hon. Odongo described him as a father, a brother, and a mentor to many across Africa. While acknowledging how he will be deeply missed in public affairs, he expressed the belief that President Nujoma’s enduring legacy will inspire many generations to come and will continue to guide both Namibia and Uganda. As a statesman, mentor and tireless advocate, his contribution to the liberation and development of Namibia and Africa as whole are immeasurable.
