The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, officially launched Uganda’s first public Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station at Amber House. This milestone, achieved through the Ministry’s initiative, marks a significant step towards green transportation and reducing carbon emissions. In her speech, Hon. Nankabirwa emphasized the need for accessible and affordable EV charging infrastructure to promote electric mobility. She highlighted the government’s plan to pilot ten EV charging stations within Kampala Metropolitan and acknowledged the role of private sector pioneers such as Zembo Electric, Gogo, and Kiira Motors.
The Minister also outlined Uganda’s broader energy efficiency initiatives, including regulatory frameworks, industrial energy audits, and promotion of efficient cooking appliances. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable transport and global climate goals, urging all stakeholders to embrace electric mobility. The launch aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan IV, positioning the country for a cleaner and energy-efficient future.
