Minister Mao Condemns Torture of Eddie Mutwe, Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights and Due Process

The Minister of Justice, Hon. Norbert Mao, has through a statement reaffirmed the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence and condemned the alleged torture of Edward Sebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, a bodyguard of the NUP leader. He emphasized that no citizen should face punishment without due process and that presenting tortured suspects before court undermines justice.

Mao called on the courts to act swiftly, guided by precedent, in upholding the rights of suspects. He cited landmark rulings like Uganda vs. Robert Ssekabira & 10 others as legal reference points. The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts, including the upcoming launch of a National Action Plan for Human Rights and a toll-free line to report violations.
